For many years, The United Methodist Church has been a global of Nothing But Nets, an organization of the United Nations Foundation. Working with other partners, our efforts have raised millions of dollars for supplies and education to battle the crippling effects of malaria around the world. But our work is not done. The statistics are still grim:
Malaria kills more than 1 million people each year
90% of malaria deaths occur in sub-Sahara Africa
Malaria is the leading killer of children in Africa - which is why only 1 in 5 children there live to see their 5th birthday
Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria
That's why the UM Church launched Imagine No Malaria, an initiative to raise $75 million to eliminate malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. In partnership with our brothers and sisters in Africa, the gifts and resources shared through Imagine No Malaria will empower an entire continent to achieve a sustainable victory over the disease. We will accomplish this goal together with a comprehensive approach to fighting malaria that includes improving prevention, education, communication and treatment.
